South Carolina Supreme Court Decision
The South Carolina Supreme Court overturned the murder convictions of Alex Murdaugh. The decision vacated his life sentences after finding that clerk Becky Hill improperly influenced the jury. Hill aimed for a guilty verdict allegedly to boost her book sales. Despite the overturned convictions, Alex Murdaugh remains incarcerated, serving a 40-year federal sentence for financial crimes.
Becky Hill’s Role and Response
On Saturday morning, Becky Hill was seen on a porch swing outside her home in South Carolina, appearing calm and quiet. She declined to comment on the case due to a gag order and pending litigation. Hill now faces a civil lawsuit from Murdaugh and resigned in 2024 after accusations of jury tampering surfaced.
“There is no excuse for the mistakes I made,” she told the court during her sentencing.
Charges and Sentencing
Hill pleaded guilty to obstruction, perjury, and misconduct charges related to the trial. She received a sentence of three years on probation in December 2025. The state’s highest court criticized her actions as a “breathtaking and disgraceful effort” to influence the jury, leading to the reversal of Murdaugh’s convictions.
The Reversed Murder Trial
Murdaugh had been found guilty of the murders of his son Paul, 22, and wife Maggie, 52, both of whom were shot on June 7, 2021. After a high-profile trial, the jury returned a guilty verdict in March 2023, and Murdaugh received consecutive life sentences without parole. However, the Supreme Court reversed the convictions earlier this month.
Continuing Legal Battles
Despite the overturned convictions, Murdaugh remains imprisoned on separate convictions for stealing millions from clients. His surviving son, Buster Murdaugh, expressed doubt about his father’s involvement in the murders during an interview, maintaining that he did not believe his father was guilty.
