The Orange County Fire Authority is monitoring a potential explosive threat at a tank facility. Fire Chief McGovern noted that crews are confirming whether a crack in the tank is releasing pressure. If the pressure is released, it means a BLEVE (boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion) threat could be avoided, which is deemed significantly dangerous.
An update provided on Sunday indicated that an all-night mission was planned to ascertain the release of the tank’s pressure, with further updates expected on Monday. McGovern emphasized the need to determine whether the explosion risk persists. If pressure is relieved, the risk of a BLEVE could be reduced. Otherwise, evacuation measures would need greater implementation.
Authorities aim to continue air monitoring to ensure no toxic air has been released. The focus remains on cooling the tank, should the BLEVE threat be neutralized. The incident at GKN Aerospace involves concerns of a tank rupture, potentially releasing harmful materials into the environment.
The Orange County Fire Authority reported early Monday that one of three tanks at the facility had been neutralized, though the affected tank had not. They clarified that what appeared as additional cracks was simply weather stripping damage.
“Crews are monitoring conditions around the clock to manage any leak risks,” a GKN Aerospace spokesperson explained on Sunday.
Division Chief Craig Covey highlighted the potential for explosions in nearby tanks containing methyl methacrylate if the peril escalates. The blast radius could extend up to half a mile, leading to substantial structural damage and air contamination.
Presently, 50,000 residents are evacuated, filling up shelters in Orange County. Lydia Green, a resident nearby, described the anxiety of being relocated without basic necessities at a shelter in La Palma. Her partner, Eugene Smith, voiced concerns over potential devastation from an explosion.
Jaden Gebeleinis, another evacuee, expressed frustration over the proximity of hazardous facilities to residential areas, fearing potential widespread impact beyond initial estimates.
The American Red Cross has reported that six shelters for evacuees are nearing full capacity. It remains uncertain when residents can return home. Initial concerns developed from a vapor release in the tank and rising temperatures detected.
Firefighters have deployed sprinklers and hoses to prevent the tank from overheating, with temperature gauges reaching their maximum display during a team operation on Saturday night.
Located around 35 miles southeast of Los Angeles, and close to Disneyland, Garden Grove faces ongoing emergency measures. Governor Gavin Newsom has proclaimed a state of emergency in the area. On Sunday, he sought federal support for county response operations.
McGovern assured collaborative efforts by officials, emphasizing unconventional strategies to resolve the issue and ensure resident safety before allowing them to return home.
