Podcaster and mixed martial arts commentator Joe Rogan has criticized President Donald Trump’s decision to host an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event at the White House to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary. Rogan expressed his thoughts during an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, labeling the plan as “odd.” The event is set to feature a 5,000-seat arena and an octagon-shaped cage on the South Lawn, marking both the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, and Trump’s 80th birthday.
Rogan shared his concerns with guests Josh Thompson and “Big” John McCarthy, both MMA veterans. “The White House thing is odd,” Rogan stated. “I don’t like it. I don’t like the idea of fighting outside at all.” Thompson concurred, noting the “problems” associated with the unconventional setup.
“The last time, like last year, same day, was 100 degrees. Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah, hot as f***,” Rogan added.
McCarthy, a longtime UFC referee, highlighted the need for extra lighting, which could attract insects during the summer event. Rogan further explained, “I just don’t think that you should compete in a world championship fight in a non-controlled environment. I think it should be inside an air-conditioned arena.” He suggested the Trump administration should build a roof for the cage being constructed at the White House.
Trump claims the $60 million event, funded by the UFC, will feature elements like a red, white and blue stage, a massive arch with stars and stripes, and large screens for broadcasting the bouts. Despite endorsing Trump in the 2024 election, Rogan has disagreed with him on several issues, including his opposition to the war in Iran and other federal actions.
Many Democrats have criticized the event, arguing it blurs the boundary between government responsibilities and campaign-style entertainment. Trump views it as a celebration of American history. California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office commented, “Mr. President, we just want lower gas prices.” Senator Adam Schiff and Representative Jared Huffman from California also expressed their disapproval.
The White House dismissed these critiques, with spokesperson Davis Ingle stating, “Dumocrats are opposed to anything that celebrates the greatness of our Country… This will be one of the greatest and most historic sports events in history.” Trump remains unbothered by the criticisms, noting the high demand for tickets.
