Tractor Supply is set to close approximately 75 Petsense stores across 17 states in the coming months as part of a business restructuring effort. The announcement came from CEO Hal Lawton during an earnings call, highlighting the company’s intent to focus on “higher growth, higher return opportunities.” Lawton noted that the stores marked for closure had been experiencing negative cash flow.
Following the closure, Tractor Supply aims to develop a profitable Petsense business that aligns well with the wider pet ecosystem the company is building. Initially, the locations destined for closure were not disclosed. However, investment firm Gordon Brothers, which has also been handling Big Lots’ bankruptcy, has now listed over 70 Petsense stores as available for lease. A representative for Tractor Supply confirmed these closures, stating the stores would remain open for a “wind-down process” lasting around eight to 10 weeks.

- Louisiana: Vidalia, Leesville, Zachary, Opelousas, Abbeville, LaPlace

Tractor Supply bought Petsense in 2016 for around $116 million, considering it a valuable addition to its retail operations. Additionally, earlier this year, Tractor Supply acquired VIP Petcare, expanding its in-store veterinary clinic services. The company has also started a partnership with Instacart to facilitate pet supply deliveries.
