President Donald Trump recently stepped into the controversy surrounding Folarin Balogun’s red card during the World Cup. Trump contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino to discuss the incident that occurred in the Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. While the exact details of the conversation remain unclear, Trump has previously referred to Infantino as a “great leader in sports” and a friend.
The USMNT’s striker, Balogun, who scored three goals in the tournament before receiving the red card, is now eligible to play again. This development came after a surprising decision by FIFA. The Athletic reported that FIFA’s disciplinary code permits the suspension of a disciplinary measure, allowing Balogun to return despite the initial red card.
If a similar infringement occurs during the probationary period, the suspension can be revoked and further sanctions imposed, per FIFA’s regulation.
FIFA announced that Balogun’s suspension would last for a year as a probationary measure. U.S. Soccer expressed their satisfaction with the committee’s decision and are now concentrating on the upcoming match against Belgium in Seattle. As Balogun previously scored twice in his World Cup debut for the U.S., his availability is a crucial development.
The Royal Belgian Football Association voiced their surprise over FIFA’s decision, considering potential actions to challenge Balogun’s eligibility for Monday’s match. However, with Balogun back in the lineup, U.S. manager Mauricio Pochettino can maintain their regular starting formation for the confrontation against Belgium.
Trump and Infantino will both attend the World Cup Final in New York/New Jersey Stadium on July 19. Trump is expected to present the trophy to the champion team’s captain, a role he notably played at the previous FIFA Club World Cup Final.
If the U.S. team succeeds against Belgium, it would mark a historic achievement, as only one other team from the country has reached the quarterfinals in World Cup history. The team would then confront the winner of the Portugal and Spain match, should they defeat Belgium first.
