Maryland Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller has countered President Donald Trump’s request for a Justice Department investigation into a mail-in ballot error in the state, dismissing accusations of corruption and suggesting that such errors are commonplace in election administration.
Trump demanded an investigation after some Maryland voters received incorrect mail-in ballots for upcoming primary elections. State election officials acknowledged the error, attributing it to Taylor Print & Visual Impressions, Inc., the vendor responsible for the ballots. Trump alleged that Democrat Gov. Wes Moore had a corrupt hand in the mishap to ensure Democratic victories.
“This was done by the Corrupt Governor of the State, Wes Moore,” Trump stated on Truth Social. “He allowed this to happen in order to make sure that Democrats win.”
Miller clarified to Fox News Digital that the Maryland State Board of Elections operates independently of the governor’s administration, describing ballot-distribution mistakes as an issue that recurs in election processes.
She stated, “The administration, they’re a separate body from us, the board of elections. And it happens, sometimes. Ballots get mailed the wrong way. It happens almost in every election.” Despite this, there is no public evidence proving that such mail-in ballot errors happen consistently in every election.
The Maryland State Board of Elections plans to send new ballots to those who received incorrect ones before May 14. They assure that measures are in place to prevent duplicate voting, addressing Trump’s concerns about potential voting issues.
Trump also publicly questioned the handling of the situation and how the initial mis-mailed ballots would be managed. He remarked on Truth Social, “In Maryland, they sent out 500,000 Illegal Mail In Ballots, and they got caught! So now, they’re going to send out 500,000 more Mail In Ballots, but nobody knows what’s happening with the first 500,000 they sent.”
Miller rejected implications of intent or corruption, attributing the problem to a vendor’s mistake. State Administrator of Elections Jared DeMarinis also refuted Trump’s allegations of “illegal” ballots being distributed.
Trump requested Attorney General Todd Blanche and the Justice Department to investigate, though no public announcement regarding a DOJ investigation has been made. Miller stated no details have been shared with her regarding the DOJ’s plans.
“We’ll see what the investigation shows,” Miller remarked.
