Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs triumphed in the Western Conference finals, securing their place in the NBA Finals. They defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 111-103 in Game 7, held in Oklahoma City.
Wembanyama scored 22 points, while Julian Champagnie contributed significantly with 18 of his 20 points from three-pointers. This victory allows the Spurs to advance to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014, where they will face the New York Knicks in Game 1 on Wednesday night.
“This feeling, I can’t explain it,” said Wembanyama. “It’s so powerful.”
Other notable contributions came from Stephon Castle with 16 points and De’Aaron Fox adding 15 points. Dylan Harper scored 12 points, while Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell each added 11 points for the Spurs. Despite falling short, the Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had an outstanding performance, leading the team with 35 points and nine assists.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson expressed confidence in the team’s potential. “Back in October, we knew we had a chance to be pretty good,” Johnson stated.
A pivotal moment in the game occurred in the fourth quarter when the Spurs’ Luke Kornet blocked a potentially game-changing shot from Oklahoma City’s Isaiah Hartenstein. Kornet’s defensive play prevented the Thunder from closing the score gap and was a highlight despite his limited time on the court.
Thunder coach Mark Daigneault emphasized the importance of learning from challenging experiences. “You have to grow from every experience, including the tough ones,” Daigneault commented.
The series was competitive, with alternating leads in previous games. Game 7 was unique in its intensity, with the score close at 80-77 in favor of the Spurs entering the fourth quarter. The Spurs managed to maintain their lead and ultimately secured victory.
Despite their efforts, the Thunder were missing Jalen Williams due to injury. Gilgeous-Alexander highlighted the difficulties of defending a championship title.
The Spurs’ victory capped off their success against the Thunder this season, winning eight of the twelve meetings. Wembanyama concluded with determination, saying, “We want four more. We’re not done.”
