Teens Outsmart Australia’s Social Media Restrictions

2 weeks ago 0

As the mother of three children who frequently use screens, I felt relief when Australia introduced its ban on social media for users under 16. Encouraged by this development, I initiated a “Take Back Control” WhatsApp group. The group included parents of my kids’ friends, and our goal was to enforce a similar ban among ourselves. My children, of course, were not pleased.

However, my attempt at imposing this ban did not succeed. Australia’s efforts aren’t without challenges either. As more countries express concerns over children’s social media usage and contemplate enacting their own restrictions, questions arise about the effectiveness of these measures. Both the UK and Canada have recently announced their intention to implement such bans.

Australia’s Experience with the Ban

Victoria Kim reports from Australia, where recent social media regulations have faced hurdles. Over the past six months, the Australian government has discovered what many parents understand all too well — gaining control over teenagers and their technologies is difficult.

In December, Australia became the pioneer in prohibiting children under 16 from accessing several popular social media platforms. This policy has drawn the attention of governments, researchers, and especially concerned parents worldwide. The potential impact of social media on the developing minds of young people is a significant worry for parents and educators alike. Consequently, various countries are considering Australia’s approach.

Despite this, the question remains: How effective are these bans, and what barriers do they face in practical implementation?
