The Impact of AI and the Need for Public Ownership

4 weeks ago 0

Artificial intelligence is set to be a major transformative force in the world. It will have a significant impact on everyone’s lives, influencing the economy, democracy, mental health, environment, and education system. There is genuine concern that as AI becomes more sophisticated, it might operate independently, posing serious risks.

The real question is not whether AI will change things, but rather who will control and benefit from these changes. Will working families see improvements in their lives? Will AI help eradicate poverty, improve life spans, and tackle climate issues? Or will it be controlled by a select few billionaires, enriching them without democratic oversight?

It’s important to recognize that AI wasn’t spontaneously conceived. The data fueling AI tools originated from the collective work of humanity, including books, music, art, scientific work, and more. This notion is supported by Sam Altman, head of OpenAI, who admitted that AI models are developed based on the shared knowledge and experiences of humanity.

However, tech leaders have often used this collective knowledge without permission or compensation. The efforts of countless creators have been exploited for profit by some of the world’s wealthiest individuals. There is a need to address this imbalance.

Given that AI leverages human knowledge, its wealth should benefit everyone. Not just billionaires or investors in Silicon Valley and Wall Street who view AI as a lucrative venture.

If AI relies on collective human intelligence, should not its benefits be distributed among all?

To address this, I plan to introduce the American AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Act. This legislation aims to give the public a stake in major AI companies. It proposes establishing a sovereign wealth fund by imposing a one-time 50% tax on these companies, not on their profits but as stock ownership.
