The transition of players from Asia to North America is a common off-season occurrence, with many returning players aiming to regain their status in Major League Baseball (MLB). Drew Anderson, a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, has become a standout in this category in 2026, following his stint in Asia last season. This promising performance could make him a key player in upcoming trade negotiations.
Anderson, aged 32, currently holds a 2-2 record with a 3.62 ERA in 19 games. Over 37.1 innings, he has recorded 46 strikeouts, presenting a valuable asset for the Tigers. Under his current contract, Anderson earns $7 million in 2026, with a team option of $10 million for 2027.
He returned to the Tigers in December, seeking to bring skills learned in South Korea’s KBO League to MLB. Previously, from 2017 to 2021, Anderson played with the Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, and Chicago White Sox. He joined Detroit with hopes of contributing to their playoff ambitions, following the Tigers’ back-to-back appearances in the American League Division Series in 2024 and 2025.
Anderson expressed his motivation during a Zoom call upon signing, mentioning his admiration for the Tigers’ playoff pursuits and his confidence in advancing further in 2026. However, the Tigers’ performance has diverged from expectations. They have lost 21 of their last 25 games, currently holding the worst record in the American League at 22-38.
FanGraphs’ playoff predictions place the Tigers’ odds only above the Kansas City Royals and Los Angeles Angels in the AL. As the Aug. 3 trade deadline approaches, Anderson’s performance makes him an attractive target for teams seeking relief pitchers. Although he hasn’t matched his KBO performance—where he achieved a 12-7 record with a 2.25 ERA and 245 strikeouts over 171.2 innings—he remains a better prospect than some of his peers.
His potential reassignment could allow the Tigers to reinforce their roster for 2027 while minimally affecting their 2026 campaign outcomes. Given current standings, the Tigers might soon focus on future seasons.
Anderson’s situation is notable, particularly compared to pitchers like Cody Ponce and Anthony Kay, who also returned from Asia with varying degrees of success in 2026. Anderson’s role in potential trades could impact the Tigers’ plans significantly.
