Evanescent Sculpture Exhibit at Chicago Botanic Garden

4 weeks ago 0

Towering above vibrant flowers, the Chicago Botanic Garden debuts its latest exhibit featuring monumental iridescent bubbles. This immersive attraction transforms the garden’s landscape, offering visitors a world filled with light and reflection. Running from June 6 through September 20, the centerpiece installation series is part of the garden’s ‘Shimmering Summer’ exhibit.

The main attraction, ‘Evanescent’, showcases large-scale bubble sculptures designed by Atelier Sisu, capturing the fleeting and fragile essence of life. This installation invites visitors to experience the magic and ethereal quality of bubbles within the 385-acre garden. According to Jodi Zombolo, associate vice president of visitor events and programs, the exhibit extends playful engagement for all ages.

Zombolo shared with Pioneer Press that the exhibit melds art with nature, emphasizing interaction through its engaging sculptures. This marks the first appearance of Sydney-based Atelier Sisu—founded by Renzo B. Larriviere and Zara Pasfield—at a U.S. botanical garden. Known for abstract forms imbued with light and sound, Atelier Sisu aims to evoke emotional connections and exploration.

The concept for ‘Evanescent’, meaning ‘temporary’ or ‘quickly fading’, was inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic. The natural beauty of bubbles, their transient existence, and wonder serve as metaphors for life’s fleeting nature. ‘Shimmering Summer’ launches on June 6 with weekend events, featuring bubble performances, glass blowing, interactive artists, and live music.

‘Evanescent’ by Atelier Sisu will be displayed at several garden locations, including the lawn south of Buehler Enabling Garden, and near the Serpentine Bridge. Opening weekend activities, set from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., are included with admission tickets.

Visitors are encouraged to interact with the sculptures, located throughout the garden, and enjoy refreshments like ‘bubble skewers’ and bubble tea. Additional summer offerings include music series on the Esplanade, game nights, and events like the Heirloom Tomato Fest.

Public summer hours are daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., extending to 8 a.m. for members. Ticket prices range from $22.95 to $24.95 for adults, and $14.95 to $16.95 for children, with free admission for kids under two.

‘We are eager to observe the summer progression of this exhibit and its integration throughout multiple locations,’ stated Zombolo. The exhibit promises a unique opportunity to appreciate nature and art intertwined.
