Insider Trading Concerns
Recent events highlight insider trading challenges. An American soldier allegedly leveraged classified details to increase $33,000 to over $400,000. Prediction markets such as Polymarket have played a role, with bets on geopolitical events like the U.S. bombing Iran or capturing Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro. Some Congress members could potentially misuse their access to such sensitive information.
Polymarket’s complex structure complicates oversight. While it operates a U.S.-regulated front end, its backend runs on a largely anonymous, international crypto platform. This setup evades straightforward regulation, making it tough to track who places bets. U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal advocates legislation requiring prediction markets to function like regulated sportsbooks (such as FanDuel or DraftKings). This may curb anonymity, reducing insider trading risks. Despite anonymity enabled by cryptocurrency, blockchain records remain permanent, ensuring traceability.
Electricity Demand Challenges
Electricity demand in Texas presents substantial challenges. Oncor, a significant utility provider, reports overwhelming requests for new power, particularly from data centers. They anticipate a demand surge of 122 GW within five years. Currently, Texas’s main grid, ERCOT, delivers a maximum of 85 GW, requiring about a 143% increase in capacity.
Jon Wellinghoff, former FERC chairman, describes the situation as unprecedented. Typical demand increases are less than 2% annually. A potential 143% rise over five years is daunting, and existing grid slack may support modest growth of 10-20%, but not a doubling in capacity. Wellinghoff suggests much of this demand might not materialize as competition among tech firms could lead to project cancellations.
Local resistance to data center developments has already resulted in at least 20 construction cancellations. The challenges highlight the complexities in scaling electricity infrastructure accordingly.
Impact of Later School Start Times
In 2022, California mandated later start times for middle and high schools. Researchers examined effects on student well-being and performance. Findings showed increased sleep for students, with notable mental health benefits for boys. Additionally, math and English scores improved, especially for Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students.
These results underscore the potential of non-monetary interventions in education. Simply adjusting school schedules can contribute to academic improvements, offering a straightforward solution to a persistent challenge.
