President Trump extended his congratulations to Steve Hilton, the Republican California gubernatorial candidate he endorsed in April. With votes still being counted, Hilton leads with 27.8% of the votes, ahead of Democrats Xavier Becerra at 25.4% and Tom Steyer at 19.6%. While Hilton’s current lead suggests he may advance to a runoff, a victory is not guaranteed. In past elections, Republican early votes have given way to Democratic gains as mail-in ballots were counted.
On election day, Trump announced on Truth Social that federal funding would prioritize California if Hilton won, suggesting a Democratic governor might not receive similar support.
Democrats see uncounted votes as a potential advantage, with experts predicting a swing towards Democratic ballots as counting continues. This could benefit Becerra, Steyer, and other Democrats in close races.
Early results show a mix in California congressional races, with redrawn districts offering advantages to some Democratic candidates, particularly through the effects of last year’s Proposition 50.
“California has a long voting process, and in tight races, final counts can take days,” said a spokesperson from the nonpartisan California Voter Foundation.
In Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass secured her place in the November runoff, leading ahead of Spencer Pratt and City Councilmember Nithya Raman. Data shows shifts between early Republican strongholds to Democratic trends as votes continue being tallied.
Measure NDC in Monterey Park passed, banning data centers within the city, signaling a growing trend of opposition across the country.
Elsewhere, election night reflected a complex political landscape, with voter patterns hinting at shifts that may alter both state and local levels when all votes are finally tallied.
