Choosing an electric vehicle can be challenging, especially when deciding between popular models like the Tesla Model Y and the Toyota bZ. Both of these electric SUVs offer impressive features, but which one is the best fit for you? Edmunds’ experts have analyzed them to help you make an informed decision.
Range and Charging
Toyota has significantly revised its all-electric SUV, previously known as the bZ4X. The 2026 bZ boasts a range of up to 314 miles on a single charge, according to EPA estimates. In tests, Edmunds found it could cover 331 miles, which is notable for a small electric SUV.
The Tesla Model Y, particularly the Premium Rear-Wheel Drive version, offers a longer range, estimated at 357 miles by the EPA. While Edmunds hasn’t tested this specific version, other Model Y variants have met their range estimates.
When testing charging speeds at public fast-charging stations, both SUVs delivered similar results. They can add up to about 100 miles of range in 15 minutes. Tesla’s Supercharger network, however, offers more convenience for Model Y owners.
Winner: Model Y
Driving Experience and Interior Space
The Tesla Model Y excels in driving dynamics, with quick acceleration, a smooth ride, and a sporty feel during cornering. Its well-insulated cabin reduces road noise, and the front seats provide comfort for long drives.
The Toyota bZ presents brisk acceleration in both its single- and dual-motor configurations. In 0-to-60 mph tests by Edmunds, the front-wheel-drive bZ surpassed the base Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive, while the all-wheel-drive bZ was slightly behind the Model Y All-Wheel Drive.
Though the bZ has a comfortable ride, it doesn’t match the Model Y’s cornering composure. The Model Y also offers more rear legroom and cargo space, making it ideal for families and storage needs.
Winner: Model Y
Technology
Tesla’s infotainment system is a standout feature with its clean interface and fast response. It includes dual wireless chargers and advanced driver assistance options. The Full Self-Driving feature allows for hands-free driving on highways and city streets. However, Tesla lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, which might deter some buyers.
Conversely, Toyota includes a new 14.1-inch touchscreen that’s user-friendly and supports wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The bZ’s features include dual wireless phone chargers and four fast-charging USB-C ports. It offers a hands-free driving feature, although only at low speeds on highways.
Winner: Model Y
Pricing and Value
The base Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive starts at $41,630, but lacks some desirable features. The Premium version, priced at $51,630, includes additional power, range, and a more upscale interior.
Starting at $36,495, the Toyota bZ is well-equipped for its price. The top-tier bZ Limited, comparable to the Model Y Premium, offers more features at a cost of $46,895 for its all-wheel-drive version.
Winner: bZ
Edmunds’ Conclusion
Toyota’s bZ improvements make it an appealing electric SUV, especially with its competitive starting price. However, the Tesla Model Y sets the standard with superior technology, performance, and overall refinement. While Toyota has made advances, the Model Y remains the leader in this segment.
