The U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division has begun an investigation into diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices at Arizona State University (ASU). This action follows recent viral videos that suggest the university denied equal treatment to students based on race, color, or national origin.
The DOJ stated that the alleged discrimination occurred while the university attempted to conceal its practices from federal scrutiny. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon emphasized that all students should have equal access to opportunities and resources, regardless of race, color, or national origin. Dhillon reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to maintaining universities free from unlawful discrimination, especially when attempts are made to hide illegal activities to evade oversight.
No student should be denied access to opportunities or resources because of race, color, or national origin,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon.
ASU, one of the nation’s largest universities and a major recipient of federal funds, is required by federal law to provide equal access to its programs, regardless of race, color, or national origin. The DOJ’s investigation will assess whether ASU’s DEI policies result in illegal discrimination in areas such as admissions, recruitment, scholarships, and educational support.
An ASU spokesperson assured compliance with federal law, stating that the university does not discriminate in admissions. Since 2010, ASU has operated under a state constitutional provision prohibiting preferential treatment or discrimination based on race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin.
ASU acknowledged the DOJ investigation and referenced the viral videos associated with it but withheld comments on these recordings, noting that university employees featured in the videos are unauthorized to represent ASU.
The DOJ clarified that its Civil Rights Division has not reached any conclusions concerning the investigation’s subject.
