New Zealand’s foreign minister expressed surprise upon learning of a one-year travel ban imposed by China. This reaction came after four New Zealand lawmakers visited Taiwan without previous issues.
Vice President Bi-khim Hsiao of Taiwan hosted New Zealand lawmakers Laura McClure, Maureen Pugh, Duncan Webb, and David Wilson in May at Taipei’s presidential office. A photo from the event features these lawmakers alongside Taiwanese officials, captured by the Presidential Office of Taiwan through Agence France-Presse.
In an unprecedented move, Chinese government officials announced on Thursday that these lawmakers are prohibited from visiting China for a year following their recent trip to Taiwan. This marks the first instance of such a restriction against New Zealand parliamentarians.
The affected lawmakers traveled to Taipei as part of a cross-party group formed in 2023 to sustain relations between New Zealand and Taiwan. Local media highlighted this long-standing tradition of visits to Taiwan by New Zealand lawmakers.
Winston Peters, New Zealand’s minister of foreign affairs, via a spokesperson, expressed shock at China’s decision. Historically, New Zealand members of Parliament have visited Taiwan without encountering such bans.
Given the longstanding history of visits, the minister was surprised by China’s first-ever travel ban on New Zealand MPs for traveling to Taiwan,
the spokesperson stated.
The travel limitation includes restrictions from entering China, Hong Kong, and Macau, as per the spokesperson. In response, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry condemned China’s action strongly, accusing Beijing of overstepping its bounds.
This travel restriction indicates China’s ongoing measures to diplomatically isolate Taiwan, perceived by China as a part of its territory. As New Zealand’s primary trade partner, China often views any interaction with Taiwan’s officials as undermining its sovereignty.
