A New Chapter: Transforming Slums into Sustainable Homes

Pooja Gawali and her family transitioned from a cramped tin shack to a newly designed apartment. The move signified much-needed privacy, allowing her to pursue personal interests such as sewing. Her family’s new home is part of an award-winning construction project.

Previously, Gawali lived in a single-room dwelling lacking indoor plumbing, shared with multiple family members. The environment in Sanjaynagar—a slum area of Maharashtra—offered no privacy. The cramped conditions forced constant vigilance. Streets lined with shacks and mud paths characterized their neighborhood.

Transformation and New Beginnings

In 2022, Gawali moved into a spacious apartment in Swapnapurti. This building, housing 33 families, offers individual rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. Connected apartments provide convenience, maintaining familial closeness while enhancing personal space.

The building design contributes to comfort. Materials used help regulate temperature, making the environment more livable despite the local climate.

Innovative Redevelopment Project

The Sanjaynagar Redevelopment Project reinvents slum living with community involvement. Families contribute 10% of the apartment costs, around $1,000, facilitated by low-interest loans. Government schemes and donations from organizations like the Currystone Foundation cover the remainder.

Community-Driven Improvements

The initiative has gained international recognition for sustainable housing solutions. Experts highlight its community-led focus, ensuring attention to communal areas and social services. The Community Design Agency incorporated resident input into its design plans, fostering strong neighborhood bonds.

The Journey to Revitalization

Snehalaya, a local nonprofit, played a critical role in facilitating the project. Established trust with residents eased their temporary relocation during reconstruction.

Some challenges remain. Ongoing adjustments to housing laws might affect timelines, but the project continues, aiming for greater cost-effectiveness and independence.
