AfD Gains Momentum in German State Elections

3 weeks ago 0

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is capitalizing on its recent success in Saxony-Anhalt. Achieving 44 percent of the vote there, the party now positions itself favorably for upcoming state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin. With voters going to the polls on September 20, the AfD stands strong according to both polls and prediction markets.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Observations

Recent polling indicates the AfD leads in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The northeastern coastal state’s chamber requires 36 seats for a majority out of 71. PolitPro polling suggests the AfD has 35 percent support, followed by the SPD with 30 percent. The CDU, Die Linke, and the Greens trail further. Prediction market Polymarket places the AfD’s likelihood of becoming the largest party at 82 percent.

A key factor in these elections is whether other parties will cooperate with the AfD. Traditionally, major parties have avoided such alliances to prevent the AfD’s rise to power. However, BSW, a far-left party, garnered 5 percent in Saxony-Anhalt and expresses interest in participating in government formation, potentially changing the landscape.

Berlin Election Dynamics

Polling in Berlin reveals a close contest. The city’s chamber allocates at least 130 seats, with a majority needing 66, but the number often increases due to additional seats. Polling aggregates show Die Linke slightly leading with 19.8 percent, closely followed by the CDU at 19.6 percent, and AfD with 17.9 percent.

Berlin faces a fragmented political field with no clear two-party coalition viable. As of recent data, prediction markets like Polymarket give Die Linke a favorable 45 percent chance of winning, followed by the CDU at 32 percent and the AfD at 17 percent.

Political expert Louis Perron notes the AfD’s performance in Saxony-Anhalt may energize left-leaning voters to mobilize against them. This situation places Chancellor Friedrich Merz in a complex position, urging behind-the-scenes discussions as elections approach.
