Ainsley Wilson’s Journey to Leadership and Volleyball Dominance

Ainsley Wilson, a senior middle hitter committed to Dayton, has transformed over her high school volleyball career at Burlington Central. Initially lacking confidence despite her skills, Wilson gradually developed into a dominant player and vocal leader.

Wilson reflects, saying she was timid and unsure of her abilities as a freshman but has now gained significant confidence and takes pride in her leadership role. Her presence is formidable for opposing teams, driving Burlington Central’s successes this season.

During the Rockets’ match on Thursday, Wilson contributed five kills, two blocks, and two aces in their 25-20, 25-17 win against Jacobs. Her leadership positively influences her teammates, including Lani Akenten, who matched the kills and added seven digs. Other contributors included Kaylie Brown with four kills and Makenna Manganiello’s six aces for Burlington Central. Jacobs players Adele Kron and Rachelle Zieba also had four kills each.

Coach Julia Smagacz highlights Wilson’s growth in leadership rather than just her on-court skills, noting the transition from an intimidated freshman to a vocal leader. Wilson’s hitting is described as a challenge for opponents.

Wilson acknowledges her latent leadership qualities, stating she wasn’t inclined to assert herself with upperclassmen present earlier. Now, as a senior, she confidently takes charge vocally and on the court. Her role includes serving, an opportunity she sought, resulting in her becoming one of the team leaders in aces during varsity matches.

In the match against Jacobs, Burlington Central pulled themselves from a 20-20 tie in the first game and distanced themselves in the second, aided by Wilson’s decisive kills. Jacobs coach Michael Depa lauded their efforts against Wilson’s powerful hits, highlighting their attempts to improve blocking.

Wilson sees similarities between herself and promising freshman Lani Akenten, seeking to mentor her based on past experiences. Their collaboration showcases potential, adding value to Burlington Central’s season.

Coach Smagacz finds the dynamic between Wilson and Akenten remarkable, witnessing their performance together as impressive.
