Alanis Morissette Reflects on Hostility After ‘Jagged Little Pill’

3 weeks ago 0

Alanis Morissette became a major music star with the release of her album Jagged Little Pill. However, her success came with a frightening backlash, which included websites plotting her murder. Speaking on the podcast Call Her Daddy, Morissette described the hostility she faced, such as death threats and denigration from fellow musicians.

Morissette noted that terror and resistance were a normal part of the response to her lead single You Oughta Know. She revealed that certain websites were created to discuss ways to kill her after Jagged Little Pill gained international fame. This level of animosity went beyond mere criticism of her music.

She shared that there was widespread animosity, including critiques from musicians she admired. Notable mentions included Courtney Love and Sinéad O’Connor, who later apologized for their comments. Morissette highlighted the lack of supportive groups or ‘girl squads’ at the time.

Decades later, Morissette views the situation differently, drawing parallels with current sentiments about Taylor Swift. She argued that societal structures often foster a belief that only one individual can thrive at the top, promoting a scarcity mindset.

Morissette’s career began early, including appearances on Canadian children’s television. Initially a dance-pop singer in Canada, her career shifted significantly with Jagged Little Pill in 1995. The album topped the Billboard 200, won multiple Grammy Awards, and established her as a music icon.

In recognition of her contributions, Morissette was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2026.
