Alex Marquardt Joins Al Jazeera After Leaving CNN Amid Defamation Case

1 hour ago 0

Alex Marquardt, who left CNN following a significant defamation trial, has begun a new position with Al Jazeera English. He shared his excitement about joining Al Jazeera in Washington, appreciating their global coverage.

Marquardt was previously involved in a prominent defamation case against CNN in 2025. The case, brought by U.S. Navy veteran Zachary Young, centered on a 2021 report by Marquardt. The report accused Young of exploiting Afghans fleeing the Taliban in Afghanistan. It implied he was engaged in black market activities during the U.S. military withdrawal.

The jury initially awarded Young $5 million in damages. However, a later settlement with CNN likely involved a larger payment, as the jury had considered imposing punitive damages between $50 million and $100 million. CNN let go of Marquardt around five months post-trial. Sources suggested his departure related to the defamation case, although the network did not comment on personnel matters.

Marquardt’s new role at Al Jazeera involves hosting a daytime show, ‘This is America.’ The network, funded by the Qatari government, launched its English service in 2006. Marquardt’s announcement received support from former CNN colleagues.

Post-trial, Young expressed no forgiveness towards Marquardt for the trial’s events. Despite this, he showed no resentment about Marquardt’s new opportunity, remarking on the alignment between Marquardt’s reporting style and Al Jazeera’s newsroom.

Throughout the trial, Marquardt defended his report, stating it was not intended to be damaging, and maintained pride in his journalism work. Though CNN apologized on-air in March 2022 following legal threats from Young, Marquardt and others at CNN felt the apology was unnecessary. A CNN executive described the apology as a legal strategy.
