Ovechkin was in Russia during the offseason to participate in the Match of the Year, a well-known charity game featuring several NHL and KHL players. Notable during this event was Philadelphia Flyers forward Matvei Michkov, who scored a remarkable goal that attracted attention online.
While in Saint Petersburg, Ovechkin encountered the couple as they captured pictures to commemorate their wedding.
