1 month ago 0

Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu announced her decision to take the 2026-27 figure skating season off from competition. She plans to return for the 2027-28 season. Liu shared her decision in a post saying, “While people are announcing programs, I’m taking this time to announce that I will not be competing this season.”

Liu explained her need to challenge herself in new ways to advance her artistry and skating skills. “It’s important to me that my sport reflects my personal growth. I’m gonna take the time to recalibrate, fine-tune things,” she added. Liu reassured fans she would return and would support her teammates during her hiatus.

In an interview, Liu revealed her focus during the break will be on training and enhancing various aspects of her skating, including artistry, spins, and jumps. “I really want to improve my skating and evolve,” she said, emphasizing that she would still cheer on her competitors and teammates.

Liu described her decision as logical, emotional, and physical, stating, “This just makes the most sense.” She admitted she would miss the international competition presence, but embraced the prospect of more opportunities in the future. Her coaches, Phillip DiGuglielmo and Massimo Scali, supported her decision without needing justification.

Liu’s coach highlighted her rising popularity, remarking on her explosive growth. At 21, Liu became the first American to win Olympic women’s singles gold since 2002. Following her victory in Milan, she skipped the World Championships but stayed active in the Stars on Ice tour and pursued opportunities like a music video appearance and attendance at Paris Fashion Week.

Liu had initially retired at 16 after her 2022 Olympic debut. She returned in the 2024-25 season with a renewed passion, capturing a world title in her first season back. Reflecting on her journey, Liu expressed gratitude for the people and team she worked with, pointing out her continued love for skating.

Originally scheduled to compete at Saatva Skate America in November, Liu remains connected with her sport. The U.S. lineup still features prominent names, and Liu emphasized her intention to keep supporting her teammates. “I always want to support my teammates, so I’ll be around,” she said, promising to stay actively involved in any opportunities that come her way.
