As the United States sweltered under an intense heat wave, celebrations marking America’s 250th anniversary pressed on. Despite the oppressive temperatures, the spirit of the nation remained unshaken.
Each year, despite political divisions, Americans join together to celebrate the Fourth of July. This week, as preparations for the 250th anniversary intensified, another challenge emerged: scorching heat across much of the country.
The relentless heat led to the disruption of several events. In Philadelphia, a city steeped in American history, a significant parade was called off on Friday due to anticipated triple-digit heat. This parade was expected to be among the largest in the city’s history.
Nevertheless, celebrations continued. Across the country, from small towns to big cities, Americans found unique ways to mark the semiquincentennial. Activities included soapbox derby races, cattle drives, and fife-and-drum performances. Fireworks also lit up the skies, a traditional hallmark of the celebrations.
