Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth faced multiple interruptions from anti-war protesters during an autonomous warfare panel at the U.S. Army’s 2026 Annual Meeting and Exposition. The event took place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., where Hegseth was interrupted four times within a span of five minutes.
Protesters voiced strong criticisms. One exclaimed, “Children in Gaza are starving! He is a war criminal!” Another accused, “You’re not a warrior, you’re a coward!” In response to one protester, Hegseth remarked, “She thinks highly of me.” The disruptions led to the removal of all six protesters from the venue, although Hegseth continued his discussion over their outbursts.
The interruptions reflect growing opposition to U.S. military strategies in the Middle East. The Trump administration has been criticized for its backing of Israel and its handling of the conflict in Gaza. Hegseth is notably involved in the administration’s increased military actions against Iran this year.
Earlier in 2026, coordinated U.S. and Israeli strikes targeted Iran. The campaign, supported by both Hegseth and President Donald Trump, aims to counter threats from Iran’s nuclear capabilities, missiles, navy, and other military assets.
Newsweek has contacted the Pentagon for a statement regarding these interruptions. Further updates on the story are expected to follow.
