Energy and Semiconductor Investment Announcements
President Donald Trump emphasized significant investments in the energy and semiconductor sectors, emphasizing his economic agenda prior to a midterm election rally in Arizona. As voters express concerns over living costs, Trump disclosed that Taiwan plans to purchase up to $80 billion in liquefied natural gas from the Alaska LNG project over a span of 20 years, alongside a $4.4 billion investment in its development. He further announced a $21 billion endeavor involving GlobalFoundries to establish two new semiconductor facilities in Malta, New York, with support from Japan.
Economic Pressure and Voter Sentiment
Trump’s announcements were made amid economic dissatisfaction, with an Associated Press-NORC poll revealing only 17 percent approval for Trump’s handling of living costs. A Reuters/Ipsos survey showed that 78 percent of Americans attribute rising prices to Trump’s policies, including tariffs and the Iran conflict. This sentiment intensified after the Labor Department reported increased inflation rates in September, showing a 0.6 percent rise from August and a 3.7 percent increase from the previous year, driven partly by a 9.1 percent surge in gasoline prices.
Job Creation and Trade Policies
Despite economic challenges, Trump portrayed these investments as proof of job creation through his trade policies. The commitment from Taiwan involves purchasing 30 percent of the Alaska LNG project’s output over 20 years. Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs stated that plans include buying 6 million metric tons of LNG annually, although detailed investment terms are yet to be finalized through negotiations and commercial contracts. South Korea’s alleged participation represents a $50 billion investment, though confirmation is pending.
GlobalFoundries’ investment is expected to generate 27,000 jobs in construction and supply chains, plus over 1,000 skilled manufacturing positions in Malta, New York. The president described the Alaska LNG initiative as “the GREATEST Project in Alaska History,” and the semiconductor investment as a “HUGE WIN FOR AMERICA,” asserting his role as a “great Businessman President” presiding over “the Greatest Economy in the World.”
