1 hour ago 0

In Miami Gardens, Florida, Lionel Messi led Argentina to a 3-2 victory over Cape Verde, securing a spot in the World Cup Round of 16. The defending champions faced a challenging match against Cape Verde, which continued until the final moments of extra time.

The decisive goal for Argentina came from an own-goal, as Cristian Romero’s header deflected off Diney Borges of Cape Verde in the 111th minute. Messi opened the scoring with his 20th career World Cup goal. Lisandro Martinez added another in the 103rd minute, putting Argentina ahead 2-1.

Cape Verde’s Sidny Lopes Cabral and Deroy Duarte astonished the predominantly Argentina-supporting crowd in Miami by scoring equalizers. Argentina will face Egypt next, which defeated Australia in a penalty shootout.

Cape Verde’s World Cup debut was remarkable, with surprising draws against Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia. The team, led by 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, became the smallest nation to reach the knockout stage. Vozinha recorded 10 saves against Argentina, including five against Messi.

Messi’s exceptional goal, achieved by sneaking behind the Cape Verde defense on a well-timed run with a pass from Martinez, brought the early lead. Messi currently leads the Golden Boot race with seven goals, surpassing France’s Kylian Mbappé. Messi extended his record with a total of 12 goals in his latest eight-match scoring streak.
