Asian Markets Surge as U.S. Treasury Eases Bond Pressure

1 hour ago 0

Asian stock markets rose on Thursday, influenced by upbeat performances on Wall Street and a noteworthy boost in South Korea’s Kospi. The U.S. Treasury Department’s plan to significantly increase long-term government debt purchases uplifted market sentiment by potentially alleviating pressure from bond markets. This initiative could lead to higher bond prices and lower yields, benefitting share prices.

Stock Market Performance

South Korea’s Kospi index soared 6.1%, reaching 6,858.91, after declining 5.8% the previous day due to AI-related stock sell-offs. Key stocks like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix recorded gains of 9.7% and 14.1%, respectively, with SK Hynix announcing a major share buyback.

Meanwhile, Japan’s Nikkei 225 climbed 1.3% to 66,178.26, recovering from losses earlier in the week. Despite reporting a trade deficit for the third consecutive month, shares of SoftBank Group, an OpenAI investor, rose 3.8%.

Other regional indices showed moderate gains. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng increased 1.1% to 25,786.32, and the Shanghai Composite edged up 0.3% to 3,905.23. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.3% to 9,066.40. Taiwan’s Taiex was nearly unchanged, while India’s Sensex improved by 0.7%.

Bond Market Dynamics

The announcement by the U.S. Treasury led to falling yields on U.S. government bonds. The yield on the 10-year Treasury dropped to roughly 4.64% from 4.71%, although it remains higher than before the conflict in Iran. The 30-year Treasury yield similarly decreased to 5.18% from 5.28%. Japanese government bonds also saw yield reductions, with the 10-year yield falling to about 2.83%.

Oil and Currency Markets

Oil prices were slightly up early Thursday, with Brent crude rising 0.3% to $91.90 per barrel amid stagnation in U.S.-Iran negotiations. U.S. benchmark crude edged higher by 0.2% to $84.57 per barrel.

On the currency front, the U.S. dollar strengthened against the Japanese yen, reaching 158.60 yen from 158.16 yen. Meanwhile, the euro traded at $1.1676, a slight decrease from $1.1677.
