Senator Bernie Sanders, representing Vermont, remained silent on Tuesday when asked about allegations against Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner. These questions, posed by Fox News Digital, sought to explore Sanders’ views on accusations from women who claimed misconduct by the candidate.
As Sanders waited for an elevator at the Capitol, a reporter from Fox News Digital asked whether he believed the allegations against Platner. Sanders, who has previously campaigned for Platner and continues to support him, did not provide any response.
“Senator, do you believe the women accusing Platner of abuse?” Fox News Digital asked. “You were campaigning for him recently, so I was wondering what you think about the allegations made against him.”
Additional questions were directed at Sanders about claims that Platner was aware of a controversial tattoo linked to Nazi imagery. Again, Sanders refrained from commenting.
Graham Platner, a Marine veteran and oyster farmer, is under scrutiny for a series of controversies impacting his Senate campaign. Allegations include abusive behavior from multiple women, alongside criticism over sexually explicit messages, offensive social media content, and the Nazi-linked tattoo. Platner has denied any wrongdoing and defended himself against these accusations.
Despite the controversies, Platner maintains support from key Democrats, including Sanders, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Senator Elizabeth Warren.
The unfolding situation raises questions about its potential impact on voters. The primary elections in Maine on Tuesday will determine who will run against Republican Senator Susan Collins in November. This race is considered one of the most watched Senate contests in the nation.
