On the Waterfront marked Eva Marie Saint’s first entry into film after years of experience in theater and television. Known for her appearances in Elia Kazan’s 1954 On the Waterfront and Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 North by Northwest, Saint passed away at the age of 102. Her beginnings were in Albany and Delmar, New York, where she showed an early talent in acting.
Saint’s career began with formal training at the Actors Studio in New York. Her performances on Broadway and live television during the late 1940s highlighted her talent before she shifted to film. At nearly 30, Saint’s film career started with Elia Kazan’s encouragement to screen test alongside Marlon Brando. In a scene for On the Waterfront, Saint captivated Kazan with her chemistry with Brando, landing her the role.
In the film, Saint portrayed Edie, a Catholic schoolgirl caught up in union corruption in Hoboken, New Jersey. She embarks on a quest for justice after her brother’s murder. Her role in the film earned her an Oscar, solidifying her status as a talented actress.
Saint’s versatility became evident with her role as femme fatale Eve Kendall in North by Northwest opposite Cary Grant. Yet, her personal life reflected a different narrative. After marrying director Jeffrey Hayden in 1951, Saint prioritized her family, taking fewer roles to focus on her children.
In the 1970s, Saint returned to television, earning accolades for her work, including an Emmy award for the miniseries People Like Us in 1990. Her contribution to film and television remains memorable, attesting to her enduring legacy in the entertainment industry.
