Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont is calling on Democratic leaders to restrict the involvement of super PACs in party primaries. Sanders believes that wealthy outside groups have too much influence over Democratic nominations, specifically targeting the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in his criticism of outside spending.
In a post on X, Sanders highlighted the issue of super PACs like AIPAC spending millions in Democratic primaries, and then aiding in the election of Republicans. He stated, “My message to Democratic leaders: Ban super PACs from Democratic primaries NOW.”
Sanders shared a letter dated August 8, addressed to prominent Democratic leaders, urging them to act on this issue. He pointed out that AIPAC and related groups spent over $30 million in Michigan’s Democratic primary to defeat Dr. Abdul El-Sayed. Additionally, he mentioned plans of further spending to support Republican Mike Rogers in the general election.
According to Sanders, it’s not only AIPAC that’s involved; other corporate super PACs in various sectors have already spent a record $517 million this election cycle. He emphasized the influence these groups have over Democratic primaries, only to support Republican candidates if their preferred Democrat loses.
AIPAC claims to support pro-Israel candidates from both parties. The organization is affiliated with the United Democracy Project, which aims to defeat those opposing the U.S.-Israel relationship.
Sanders reiterated the need for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and for public financing of elections. He stressed that the Democratic Party could prohibit super PACs from its primaries and urged immediate action to end what he describes as a corrupt system.
Moreover, Sanders and Representative Summer Lee introduced the Abolish Super PACs Act in May. This legislation aims to cap individual contributions to super PACs at $5,000, effectively dismantling them.
