Bill Maher and Ben Affleck’s Long-standing Disagreement

2 minutes ago 0

Bill Maher revealed that Ben Affleck has continually declined invitations to appear on HBO’s “Real Time” since their argument in 2014. During a discussion, Affleck criticized comments made by Maher and Sam Harris about Islam, calling them “gross” and “racist.” Maher expressed on his “Club Random” podcast that he invites the actor back every year, hoping for a resolution through a private conversation.

“I love him, but we just are going to disagree on that one,” Maher said, expressing his desire for finding middle ground after 12 years.

Affleck’s representative did not respond for comment, but the actor explained his stance in a 2017 interview. He emphasized his belief against stereotyping individuals by race or religion, reflecting his reaction during the 2014 debate.

“I love a good debate, and I get very energized by it,” Affleck mentioned, highlighting his opposition to generalizing people based on faith or ethnicity.

The 2014 discussion also included Sam Harris and Nicholas Kristof. Affleck opposed sweeping generalizations when Harris argued that criticism of Islamic doctrine was misunderstood as bigotry.

“How about more than a billion people who aren’t fanatical, who don’t punch women, who just want to go to school, have some sandwiches, pray five times a day,” Affleck argued, challenging stereotypes.

Maher defended his criticism by mentioning threats related to blasphemy and dissent.

“It’s the only religion that acts like the mafia that will f—ing kill you if you say the wrong thing,” Maher stated.

Affleck labeled this characterization as gross and racist. Harris clarified he differentiated between jihadists and other Muslims during their conversation.

Despite Maher’s repeated invitations, he and Affleck have not reconciled. Maher mentioned how the episode gained attention due to its emotional nature with a movie star.
