Body Found After Search for Missing Australian Teenager

47 minutes ago 0

The search for 18-year-old Australian Lily Hooper, who disappeared on August 12, has led to the discovery of a woman’s body. New South Wales Police announced the discovery during an operation targeting a missing bushwalker in the Southern Highlands. Although formal identification remains incomplete, the officers suspect the identity is likely Hooper’s.

This announcement followed New South Wales Premier Chris Minns’ initial claim in the state parliament that Hooper had been found alive. This claim was later retracted. Local media reported that Hooper’s family had also been informed of her being alive, adding further confusion to the situation.

Mal Lanyon, the New South Wales police commissioner, expressed regret in a public apology, stating, “That miscommunication, I apologize for any additional trauma that may have caused Lily’s family, but certainly for the embarrassment and confusion that caused.”

An investigation is planned to address the communication breakdowns between agencies. Hooper initially left her Sydney residence to hike in a national park on August 12 but failed to return, prompting her family to report her missing that evening.

The Hooper family shared their feelings in a statement earlier this week, expressing that they are “absolutely devastated that our beloved daughter Lily is missing.” They requested privacy and understanding as they “navigate this unimaginable situation.”

Updates will follow as the story develops.
