Justin Herbert is emphasizing his execution on the field as the Chargers search for their first win. The seventh-year quarterback recently cut off a reporter asking about locker room leadership amid the team’s 0-2 start before an upcoming game against the undefeated Buffalo Bills.
We’ve got great leadership on this team. I trust those guys in that locker room, so I don’t think anyone has panicked or worried because that’s not going to do us any good,
Herbert said. He stressed the importance of focusing on each play, recognizing errors, and learning from them.
Herbert’s strong messaging was unexpected. He typically sticks to neutral statements during press events. However, teammates and coaches see Herbert’s leadership qualities more often than the public does, which is partly why the Chargers are confident in him despite the offense’s rocky start.
Chargers wide receiver Tre’ Harris has faith in Herbert, stating, Everybody’s still on the same page. Everybody has extreme belief in 10, and extreme belief in [offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel] as well.
Despite their challenges, the team believes they’ll improve. The Chargers are currently averaging 14 points per game, just above the Miami Dolphins at 13 and Pittsburgh Steelers at 11.5. Herbert holds some responsibility for the slow start, ranking 27th in completion percentage (59.3%) and 23rd in passing yards (401), with three interceptions.
McDaniel noted Herbert often blames himself. The quarterback hasn’t found comfort in another new offensive scheme. This issue is amplified by constant changes at left guard and Jake Slaughter starting at center. The team has endured the league’s second-highest pressure rate at 45.5%, according to Pro Football Focus.
Herbert’s receivers have been inconsistent, facing challenges with pre-snap communication, drops, and injuries. The offense struggles with fumbles (7), penalties (15 for 109 yards), and self-inflicted errors. Despite these stats, Herbert isn’t solely responsible for the team’s struggles.
Safety Derwin James Jr. praised Herbert’s dedication, saying, He’s been locked in and dialed in, making all his throws. So, I can’t wait to try to get him some stops on Sunday.
McDaniel acknowledged the team’s offensive issues, considering changes moving forward, including a reduced playbook. He noted improvement in his relationship with Herbert as they address these challenges together.
Starting quarterback Justin Herbert faces pressured expectations to reverse the team’s fortunes in the current season. Yet, within the organization, the focus is on allowing Herbert to maintain his approach.
Backup quarterback DJ Uiagalelei emphasized Herbert’s consistency, noting, One thing that separates him from other leaders is his consistent greatness day after day.
Coach Jim Harbaugh asserted, Since I’ve been with Justin, there’s not a thing I’d change about him.
