Boris B. Nadezhdin Speaks Out After Brief Detention

4 weeks ago 0

Boris B. Nadezhdin, a vocal critic of the war in Ukraine, has expressed his belief about the reasons behind his recent detention. He stated, “Among our leadership, there is panic and chaos”. This remark was made during a video interview at his residence this past Tuesday.

This incident occurred when masked individuals came to his home in a suburb of Moscow. Mr. Nadezhdin had been previously labeled as a “foreign agent,” marking an end to his lengthy political career within Russia—a country known for jailing, killing, or exiling its political opponents. Following his brief detention, he was charged with a minor offense, just weeks after announcing his intention to run for the upcoming parliamentary elections in September, which followed Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

The Kremlin’s representative, Dmitri S. Peskov, asserted that Mr. Nadezhdin’s troubles were unrelated to Kremlin actions. However, Mr. Nadezhdin believes his detention reflects the myriad pressures faced by the government due to the ongoing war. This includes the impact of drone attacks, which have triggered a fuel crisis and made the conflict a direct concern for urban centers like Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Moreover, inflation has surged as war expenditures place significant strain on the economy. There is also widespread discontent regarding internet restrictions.
