Ryan Jones faced surgery just before the playoffs to repair a broken hamate bone in his right wrist. Many thought he would miss the rest of the season. However, as a determined junior infielder and pitcher, Jones aimed to rejoin St. Rita if they reached state, but managed to return even sooner, helping ensure they got there.
“It feels great,” Jones expressed. “Since my surgery, I focused on getting back to assist the team however I could. It’s awesome to contribute again.” His comeback was timely for Monday’s Class 3A Crestwood Supersectional where Jones reached base three times. His contributions propelled St. Rita to a 2-0 victory over Nazareth.
Next, the Mustangs (28-12) prepare to face East Peoria (27-13) at 10 a.m. Friday in the state semifinal at Slammers Stadium in Joliet. Though coach John Nee awaited Jones’s return for potential state matches, Monday’s unexpected return added an edge.
“He texted me Saturday, ‘Coach, are you at St. Rita Sunday?’ I asked why; he replied, ‘I think I can swing.’ Our hitting coach joined, I threw to him in the cage Monday, ensuring his father’s approval,” Coach Nee explained.
Even with stitches still in, Jones persisted in supporting his team. “My team motivated me to push through and do my best,” he remarked. Jones has been a key player, holding a .473 batting average with 33 RBIs, 24 runs, and eight doubles. He’s also pitched 10 bullpen games with a 2.80 ERA, going 2-0.
Leading off in the cleanup spot Monday, his return energized teammates, including playoff standout Julio Gutierrez, who states, “Ryan’s back. It feels great having him. He boosts our lineup as a strong hitter.” Jones worked through emotional hurdles surrounding his injury, stating, “Going to practice, unable to participate fully, was tough, but being with the team was fun.”
Rejoining during key games posed challenges but excited Jones. “There was concern about my return performance, but I embraced playing before a big audience,” he admitted. The Mustangs have secured the school’s fifth state trophy—first since 2019—and are just two wins from their first state title.
Jones concluded, “At the year’s start, I saw promise. I’ve been eager for this opportunity. Now, we must keep our bats strong and our pitching steady.”
