Adley Rutschman, obtained from the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, will commence a rehab assignment in Triple-A Worcester on Saturday. This move marks a key step in Rutschman’s recovery from left wrist discomfort.
In his anticipated return to game action, Rutschman is set to catch five innings. He has not played since July 18. The Worcester Red Sox actively promoted the three-time All-Star’s appearance on social media, noting plans for him to secure at least two at-bats.
Despite this addition, Boston doesn’t heavily depend on Rutschman’s immediate impact. The team has averaged six runs per game across an impressive 18-3 stretch since July 17. Current catchers Connor Wong and Jake Rogers provide limited offensive strength, as shown by their combined below-average OPS+.
Rutschman has shown improvement at bat when fit. This season, he holds a slash line of .251/.331/.433 and an OPS+ of 115. The potential addition of Rutschman to the lineup offers a mix of offensive and defensive enhancement, which remains valuable for the team.
