Ace, a courageous Florida K-9, made an emotional return to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office less than a week after being shot while protecting deputies. This remarkable German shepherd, seven years old, has served the department since March 2020 and recently faced severe injury during an arrest attempt.
Incident and Recovery
In a confrontation involving the arrest of 27-year-old Angel Bowers, Ace was wounded. Bowers, who failed to appear in court, allegedly fired multiple shots at deputies. This led to his death at the scene. Ace heroically shielded deputies, taking a bullet in his left front leg, causing severe damage and immense blood loss.
Deputy Natalie Oestreich, Ace’s partner and handler, promptly attended to his injuries, ensuring his swift move to safety. Initial treatment occurred at Parkway Veterinary Emergency Clinic, Lakeland, stabilizing Ace before his transfer via helicopter to Lakewood Ranch Veterinary Medical Center. At Lakewood Ranch, skilled veterinarians performed an intricate surgery, amputating Ace’s damaged leg.
A Triumphant Return
Despite the surgery, Ace demonstrated resilience. The sheriff’s office shared footage showcasing Ace’s energy as he prepared for his return home. Upon waking from anesthesia, Ace attempted to walk independently, defying challenges with spirited determination. Video captured Ace engaging with deputies, leaving the medical center to enthusiastic applause, donning a shirt that proudly proclaimed “ride or die.”

Ace’s return to the sheriff’s office marked his first visit since the harrowing incident. Sheriff Grady Judd expressed immense pride, stating Ace and Natalie exemplified bravery, saving lives amidst adversity. Judd humorously noted Ace’s happy demeanor, vouching for his recovery.
Deputy Oestreich will remain with Ace during his recuperation period before resuming work duties. Ace’s service, however, concludes with retirement. Judd encouraged Ace to enjoy a restful retirement.
