Britain Takes the Lead in Opposing Israeli Settlements

3 weeks ago 0

In recent years, Britain has shifted its stance regarding Israeli settlements, taking a more assertive position. This change marks a departure from its previous approach, which often followed France’s lead in pressuring Israel. The current British Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, is now taking bold steps that might provoke ire from the United States.

Last September, Britain announced its recognition of a Palestinian state, influenced by France’s earlier decision to make this symbolic gesture. Moving forward to the present, Britain has taken decisive action by halting trade with Jewish settlements in the West Bank. This initiative saw support from France and Canada, further straining relations with Israel. Britain’s accusations against some settlers of engaging in “ethnic cleansing” of Palestinians have intensified diplomatic tensions.

This coordinated effort highlights the domestic political dynamics within each involved nation. French President Emmanuel Macron, nearing the end of his term, sought to solidify his legacy last year. Now, with Andy Burnham in power, the British government aims to address the concerns of Labour Party members distressed by the ongoing suffering in Gaza.

The collective European pressure on Israel has led to significant diplomatic estrangement, with Israel finding itself at odds with its two largest military allies in Europe. This situation comes with economic implications that analysts believe could be more than symbolic. Daniel C. Kurtzer, a former United States ambassador to Israel, noted that while ideas like boycotting goods from settlements or differentiating them in customs have been discussed, actual measures have been limited.

Kurtzer elaborated that even labeling settlement goods distinctly from those “Made in Israel” hasn’t gained substantial traction. He concluded that Britain’s recent actions could pose a considerable economic challenge to both the settlements movement and any Israeli government supporting these settlements.
