British Prosecutors Charge Man with Terrorism Over Politician’s Murder

20 hours ago 0

British authorities have charged a 28-year-old man with terrorism-related offenses in addition to the murder of a political figure. Prosecutors have accused Joshua Kerry of South Yorkshire of preparing acts of terrorism, including against Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK.

Kerry has been in custody since his arrest for the killing of Ann Widdecombe, a former Reform UK and Conservative politician. The incident occurred on July 8 at Widdecombe’s home in Devon. According to prosecutors, Kerry allegedly entered the home as Widdecombe was having lunch, attacked her with a hammer, and stole her wallet. She was struck 21 times, and the attack was swift, concluding in under two minutes.

The latest charges against Kerry pertain to activities between May 31 and July 8. Vicki Evans, Deputy Assistant Commissioner, acknowledged the thorough work of investigators in reaching this charge, highlighting the dedication of a team of detectives, analysts, and forensic experts.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood expressed concern over the charges and extended sympathies to the family of Nigel Farage, emphasizing that attacks on politicians threaten the security of those in public service. The Jo Cox Foundation, in memory of a MP murdered in 2016, reminded the public of the broader threat such violence poses to democracy.

On a separate note, Counterterrorism Policing also announced charges against two Iranian men. Salam Ahmadyan, 36, and Rahman Salehi, 34, allegedly plotted a terrorist act targeting the Jewish community in Manchester. They are accused of communicating with a contact potentially located in Iran.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Evans labeled these charges very serious while assuring no current public threat exists. The allegations coincide with significant religious observances and follow an increase in anti-Semitic incidents in the UK.

Kerry is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, while Ahmadyan and Salehi are set for a Saturday hearing.
