WNBA player Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife, Cherelle Griner. The filing took place in Fulton County, Georgia. The couple has been married since 2018 and has a 2-year-old son. Brittney Griner cited that their marriage is ‘irretrievably broken’ with the separation date noted as July 24.
In February 2022, Brittney Griner was detained in Russia. Authorities discovered vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. This led to charges of smuggling narcotic drugs into Russia. Griner was sentenced to nine years in a penal colony.
Cherelle Griner, a lawyer, campaigned for her wife’s release throughout her detention. In December 2022, Brittney Griner was freed through a U.S.-Russia prisoner exchange.
