Southern California celebrates July 4 with vibrant fireworks displays, yet these festivities bring unwanted air pollution. As fireworks light up the night sky, they release noxious gases, soot, and toxic metals. These elements contribute to air pollution that affects revelers and residents.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District warns of hazardous air pollution levels from 5 p.m. Saturday until 3 p.m. Sunday. Affected areas include central and southern Los Angeles County, northern Orange County, and Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
Pollution levels peak Saturday evening due to fireworks and light winds. Smoke and particulates may linger until Sunday afternoon before winds disperse them. Los Angeles County Public Health reports that pollutants from fireworks can cause coughing, breathing issues, asthma, and heart attacks. Immediate medical care is crucial if symptoms worsen.
Fireworks set off at home pose increased health risks, emitting pollutants closer to ground level. According to the American Lung Association, July 4 and 5 are among the year’s worst days for air quality in the region.
“Fireworks display beautiful patterns, but cause air pollution that impacts community health,” warns LA County Public Health.
Recent pollution follows a Boyle Heights warehouse fire, which resulted in significant soot and smoke. This incident produced pollution levels similar to wildfires from the previous year.
The LA County Department of Public Health advises residents to avoid intense physical activity. Doors and windows should remain closed to limit pollution exposure. Swamp coolers and whole house fans are discouraged as they can pull pollutants indoors. Instead, use air purifiers or air conditioning to maintain indoor air quality.
