Caitlin Clark Shares Memorable Encounter with Obama at WNBA Event

Caitlin Clark expressed her admiration after meeting former President Barack Obama, who made a surprise appearance at the WNBA All-Star event. The gathering was held at the recently opened Obama Presidential Center.

Reflecting on the encounter, Clark described her conversation with Obama as unforgettable. ‘It was super cool,’ said the Indiana Fever star. ‘He complimented me on how I handle everything, given all the attention lately.’ Obama, known for his media presence, shared advice, emphasizing that he gained fame in his 40s rather than his 20s.

Obama addressed the basketball players, expressing his admiration for their talent and the growth of the game. ‘Some of you I’m meeting for the first time. All of you are extraordinary and I could not be bigger fans,’ Obama said. He acknowledged how the increased attention on their excellence has positively impacted basketball fans.

After sharing some words, Obama took a group photo with the players, followed by individual photo sessions, including with Clark. He praised the players’ involvement in community ventures and thanked them for inspiring the youth.

A’ja Wilson received special recognition from Obama, who then joined her for a brief chat. The meeting included a light-hearted exchange with New York Liberty star Jonquel Jones. Obama briefly adopted a defensive stance, prompting Jones to playfully engage him. ‘I feel like as a hooper, you know when someone’s challenging you,’ Jones explained. ‘Seeing Obama’s commitment to community work even after so much is inspiring,’ she added.

Obama’s court appearance was brief. He mentioned avoiding 5-on-5 games to prevent injury but noted that he had enjoyed a game of ‘horse’ earlier. Notably, Obama was the first sitting U.S. President to attend a WNBA game, having done so in 2010 with his daughter, Sasha. He also hosted championship-winning teams at the White House.

The players presented Obama with a No. 44 WNBA All-Star jersey, which they planned to autograph. The center served as the venue for its first professional sporting event, bringing together the WNBA community and other stakeholders. Although Obama could not attend the upcoming All-Star Game, he mentioned previously scheduled plans with his wife, Michelle.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert highlighted the significance of the event, celebrating the presidential connection to basketball. ‘He has inspired millions to dream big. His ties to basketball are exceptional,’ Engelbert stated.

After engaging with players, Obama interacted with league investors and nearly 100 high school girls, emphasizing the importance of dreaming big and achieving goals.
