Authorities are investigating the tragic disappearance of a 61-year-old grandmother from California, Theresa Jones, whose body was later found in her car at a church parking lot. Her son, Emmanuel Wesley, aged 23 from Santa Ana, faces murder charges.
According to prosecutors, Wesley allegedly shot Jones twice in the back while she sat in her car outside the Fullerton Police Department on July 4. He then reportedly moved her body to the passenger seat and drove away.
Alarm was raised on July 7 when Jones did not arrive to pick up her grandchild and stopped responding to calls from family. Four days later, on July 11, her car was discovered with her body inside in a Fullerton church parking lot. Evidence from surveillance footage reportedly captured events leading up to the shooting.
Video allegedly shows Jones outside the police department at 2:46 p.m. on July 4, with Wesley in the back seat. Investigators say that after Jones appeared to slump over the steering wheel, Wesley moved her to the passenger seat, took control of the vehicle, and drove away.
Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer described the case as a deep tragedy, especially given the familial relationship involved. He emphasized the commitment to seek justice for Jones and her family.
Family members remember Jones for her deep faith and devotion to her children and grandchildren. They created a GoFundMe campaign to support funeral costs and shared memories of her energy and humor. Known affectionately as ‘Cardi B’ for her lively personality, Jones’ loss has left a significant void in the lives of her loved ones.
Emmanuel Wesley, who has pleaded not guilty, remains detained at the Orange County Jail without bail. If found guilty of murder, along with an associated firearm enhancement, he faces a potential sentence of up to 50 years to life in prison.
