Cam Brown: Leading Naperville North on the Field

1 month ago 0

Naperville North senior defender Cam Brown started his first varsity game with more than an increased role; he had a deep appreciation for the chance to play for coach Jim Konrad’s team. Brown expressed his honor in wearing the jersey and playing on the field where many greats have played. He emphasized the importance of carrying the legacy and wearing the jersey with pride.

Brown is contributing to the development of his younger teammates as Naperville North aims to defend their Class 3A state title with mostly new players. Committed to Wisconsin-Platteville, Brown was voted team captain by his peers, only three of whom have varsity experience. Coach Konrad praised Brown’s vocal leadership and accountability, describing him as a classy individual with a strong work ethic.

During a match that ended in a 1-1 draw against West Chicago, Brown led a defense consisting of seniors Liam McKenna, Luc, and Alec Schwanebeck, junior Ziden Elganzouri, and sophomore midfielders Carter Joseph and Barrett Yeaman. Junior goalkeeper Misael Gonzalez commended Brown’s organizational skills, both on and off the field, appreciating his communication and hard play.

The memories of last year’s rigorous championship victory, achieved in harsh conditions, remain vivid for Brown. He played a part in the overtime and helped in the penalty shootout. As he reflects on leading the team, Brown acknowledges learning from past captains like Colin McMahon and Sam Hess, aiming to apply those lessons to guide the current team.

The team’s motto, “Nothing without work,” has led to multiple state titles. Brown embodies this mindset, undertaking tasks that often go unnoticed but make a significant impact. Coach Konrad highlighted the influence of New Zealand’s All Blacks rugby team in instilling such a work ethic within their players.

Brown enjoys his leadership role at center back, finding honor in continuing the program’s legacy. Despite waiting for his final season to make his mark, he is grateful for the opportunity to uphold the program’s proud tradition.
