Cam Skattebo’s Early Promise with the Giants

Cam Skattebo’s debut NFL season with the New York Giants started strong, showcasing his potential as a rising star. His performance helped lead the Giants into a competitive era, alongside teammates like Jaxson Dart.

A Devastating Turn of Events

In Week 8 at Lincoln Financial Field, Skattebo’s promising season took an unexpected turn. A tackle by Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Zack Baun resulted in a dislocated right ankle and open fracture of the right tibia. The abrupt end to his season was a shock, leaving him unsure about his future.

“Yeah, definitely,” Skattebo shared on ‘Up and Adams.’ “The first month was kind of like, ‘Damn, do I really wanna do this?’”

Mental Challenges and Recovery

Suffering a season-ending injury impacts both the physical and mental aspects of a player. Skattebo wrestled with thoughts of retirement but eventually found the mental strength to push forward. The personal introspection during his recovery was pivotal.

“It was seven games, I was like, ‘I got to go back and play.’” Skattebo reflected on his journey back to the field.

A Career Rule Put to the Test

Skattebo had set a personal rule after his successful college career at Arizona State: a major injury would mean the end of his playing days. Faced with this challenge just seven games into his NFL career, he had tough decisions to make but ultimately chose to continue.

“And that happened seven games into my career. So, it kind of sucked,” Skattebo admitted.

Rediscovering Himself

The downtime during his recovery provided Skattebo the opportunity to explore his identity as both a player and a person. This self-discovery was crucial for his comeback.

“I think that really helped me find who I am as a player and as a person,” he explained.

Returning to the Field

As Skattebo enters the 2026 season, he aims to reclaim his form in the Giants’ backfield, which includes notable players like Najee Harris and Tyrone Tracy. Under new offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, Skattebo is ready to contribute to a dynamic running back committee.

Despite the setback, Skattebo remains determined. He finished his inaugural season with 410 rushing yards and five touchdowns, along with 24 catches for 207 yards and two scores.
