Celebrating the Legacy of Evelyn Tolpa Lisek

2 weeks ago 0

Evelyn Tolpa Lisek of Gary reached her milestone 100th birthday on March 11, surrounded by family and friends. Even when I met her at the WANISS May Wine Charity Luncheon recently, she was full of joy and celebration. As the longest-serving active member of WANISS, she passed away peacefully in Hobart on June 15.

Life and Contributions

Originally part of the Women’s Association in Gary, founded in 1962, Evelyn was instrumental in its evolution. In 1975, she helped rename the group to the Women’s Association of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Society (WANISS). A founding member of a ladies’ orchestra charity group, Evelyn consistently supported the symphony.

Evelyn, known for her exquisite fashion sense, attended the annual spring luncheons since their inception over 50 years ago. At a recent event, she proudly wore her favorite wide-brimmed hat. Her dedication to the symphony and community was unyielding.

Musical Journey

Born in Gary, Evelyn graduated from Lew Wallace High School in 1944. She then studied music at MacMurray College, guided by Ann Garrels. In 1949, she married Henry Lisek, remaining together until his death in 2000.

Her musical talent was evident early on, recognized by teachers at St. Hedwig Grade School. This led her to the Chicago Conservatory of Music, where she honed her opera skills. Evelyn performed diverse musical styles and sang in several languages, allowing her to travel widely.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Evelyn engaged young audiences with her music and history-themed performances. Her commitment to music and education enriched many lives.

A Legacy Remembered

Kirk Muspratt of the Northwest Indiana Symphony described Evelyn as a devoted supporter. She consistently attended concerts since the orchestra’s first on December 7, 1941, a date also marked by Pearl Harbor’s bombing.

Evelyn cherished her Polish heritage, participating in the Chopin Chorus and Millennium Choir. Recognized for her unique programs, she proudly performed both Polish and American anthems annually. In 1979, she sang with the Papal choir for Pope John Paul II.

Her community involvement was extensive. She held leadership roles within the Polish American Congress and other cultural organizations. She also served as cantor at St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Gary.

Personal Touch

Evelyn was featured in a 1975 Gary Post-Tribune photo for an upcoming Christmas concert. She even appeared as an extra in the film “Road to Perdition,” sitting near stars Paul Newman and Tom Hanks during a church scene.

She leaves behind her children, Carolyn, Walter, Darlene, and Kathryn, as well as her extended family. Visitation services are scheduled for June 21 at Geisen-Pruzin Funeral Home, with further visitation and a Mass held on June 22 at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church.

Culinary Connections

Bobby Vinton, a longtime family friend, reminisced about Evelyn. She once participated in his telethon and valued their cultural ties. Bobby’s fondness for cooking is reflected in a shared recipe for a breakfast casserole, included below for those who seek a taste of shared traditions.
