In a remarkable act of bravery, Derrick Moore, a cherished elementary school teacher and father from Georgia, tragically lost his life while rescuing a young girl caught in a rip current off Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The incident occurred after lifeguards had left for the day, leaving Moore to heroically enter the ocean near 10th Avenue South at around 7:53 p.m.
Despite successfully bringing the girl to safety, Moore was pulled underwater by the powerful current and subsequently disappeared, according to police reports. His body was recovered after washing ashore the following day, as stated by Myrtle Beach authorities. Moore’s family confirmed that he did not know the girl he saved.
“We loved him and are truly heartbroken that he’s gone,” Moore’s daughter expressed in a statement. “He was a great father and we are all going to miss him.”
Derrick Moore leaves behind four children, with his heroic act widely celebrated by friends, former teammates, and family members. Many have remembered him as a devoted father, gifted athlete, and a selfless individual whose final actions epitomized how he lived his life.
Derrick Moore was a current teacher at Rockbridge Elementary School in Georgia, fondly known by students as “Coach,” and previously taught at Jolly Elementary School. The DeKalb County School District expressed deep sorrow over Moore’s passing, acknowledging his significant contributions to students, families, colleagues, and communities.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp offered his condolences, encouraging people to pray for Moore’s family and the DeKalb County community during this difficult time.
Moore’s athletic prowess extended back to his college years. He graduated from Samford University in 2001, where he competed in football and track and field. The university mourned his passing, describing him as both a “beloved teacher” and a “true hero.”
Former teammates and friends paid tribute to Moore’s character, sharing that his courageous actions revealed the kind of person he was. Family members highlighted his dedication to being present for loved ones and reinforced his legacy as a hero synonymous with selflessness.
A family member poignantly remarked, “You died a HERO. You died saving the life of a child, a stranger. What a Legacy.”
