Thousands of migrants have poured into Ceuta, a small Spanish territory bordering Morocco, triggering a call from local officials for a national emergency. Ceuta is facing a significant influx as people cross from Morocco. Local authorities are urging Spain’s government to intervene by sending military forces to stabilize the area.
Spain’s interior ministry has assured the safety of citizens and the nation’s border integrity. However, it stated that migration concerns alone do not warrant a national emergency declaration. Video footage shows crowds, mostly Moroccans, making their way to local roads via the breakwaters at Tarajal beach. While many are young men, there are also families with women and children. Some shouted “Viva España!” to a photographer from The Associated Press.
Spain sits at a crucial entry point into Europe for migrants seeking better economic opportunities or escaping violence. The current situation follows a surge in migration attempts to reach Ceuta, primarily by swimming. The present influx echoes a past border crisis in May 2021, when over 8,000 migrants breached the border within two days.
Juan Jesús Vivas, Ceuta’s regional government leader, emphasized the press for a national emergency due to national security threats. He has requested additional police and military presence to secure the border and ensure citizen safety. Vivas noted overwhelmed migrant centers, leaving many to sleep outdoors.
The interior ministry explained that current laws do not classify migration flows as a national security threat meriting a national emergency. Nonetheless, government bodies are collaborating to swiftly manage the situation in Ceuta. The Moroccan government is cooperating with Spain’s efforts; Moroccan police are deterring numerous border crossing attempts.
Fernando Grande-Marlaska, Spain’s Interior Minister, will visit Ceuta to assess the situation firsthand. Ceuta remains a flashpoint amid ongoing migration challenges.
