Drone Sightings Spark Security Concerns in Germany

Two drones were observed flying over a German military base earlier this week. This comes just days after a drone carrying explosives was discovered at a cargo airport, according to the German Armed Forces.

The surveillance systems at the Bundeswehr base in Mechernich detected the drones around 10 p.m. on Thursday, as stated by the German Joint Force Command. These sightings led to a deployment of military police forces to secure the area.

The Euskirchen police department has launched an investigation into the matter. They have not responded to requests for comments, and the military has refrained from disclosing more details.

The drone carrying explosives was discovered at Germany’s Leipzig/Halle Airport, a vital hub for international freight, shortly before midnight on Tuesday. While the device was defused, the U.S. officials attribute its origin to Russia.

The Leipzig/Halle Airport plays a crucial role in NATO’s Strategic Airlift International Solution (SALIS), actively involved in transporting equipment to NATO battle groups from Finland to Romania and supporting missions of alliance nations.

These incidents occur amid U.S. intelligence assessments suggesting increased willingness from Russian President Vladimir Putin to approve actions that could affect NATO territories. U.S. officials noted Russia’s involvement in dozens of attacks, including drone incursions into Romania, highlighting a trend of sabotage and cyber operations in Europe following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian Embassy in Germany described the Leipzig drone incident as part of “a new wave of anti-Russian hysteria.”
